Klaus Tiedemann (1938-2018)

It is with deep sadness that I share with you the passing of Professor Dr. Klaus Tiedemann (1938-2018), due to a long illness. His legal legacy is enormous, as he has not only been an important innovator of contemporary economic and financial criminal justice and one of the founders of European criminal law, but also and foremost an outstanding comparativist in criminal justice. In his comparative work criminal dogmatics was intertwined with constitutional and human rights values. He was also very much interested in the empirical dimension of the criminal justice in action.  Klaus Tiedemann will also be remembered worldwide as some-one that did build up a scholarly community. The way in which he was lecturing worldwide and receiving visiting scholars at the Institute in Freiburg were the mere expressions of it. Reason why some much persons were very much attached to this community under his leadership.

For his excellence he has received many awards, including eight doctorate honoris causa, the Max Planck Research prize and the MPI-AIDP Jescheck prize.

Klaus Tiedemann has been very active in the AIDP. Already in 1982 he organized in Freiburg a AIDP preparatory colloquium on the concept and rationale of economic criminal law. From 1989 until  2004 he was president of the German Group of the AIDP and vice-president of the AIDP.  Since 2004 he was honorary vice-president of the AIDP.

We will all remember Klaus Tiedemann as an excellent scholar, convinced of the importance of criminal justice in contemporary society. Foremost he was also an excellent colleague with an open human mind.
